Immigration is a complex and highly specialized area of the law. The Office of the General Counsel generally does not provide legal advice to individual University faculty, staff, or students about their personal immigration status.

Students

Academic departments and students should contact International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS; 319 335-0335) in the University International Programs department with questions about F-1 or J-1 visas and related issues for international students and scholars.

Faculty and Staff

University departments and faculty/staff should contact Faculty and Staff Immigration Services (FSIS; immigration@uiowa.edu or 319 467-3132) in the University Human Resources department for assistance with obtaining work authorization status and permanent residency filings for employees.

Personal Legal Advice

For personal legal advice, there are several local options that are trusted resources for the UI community.

  • Students:
    •  The University of Iowa College of Law Clinical Law Program’s immigration practice group (319-335-9023 or law-legal-clinic@uiowa.edu) is willing to provide rapid response evaluation for UI students with visa cancellations, for the limited purpose of connecting UI students with potential legal counsel. The clinic does not guarantee any legal representation but is willing to assist with an assessment of student circumstances and provide personalized recommendations for trusted lawyers in the immigration field.

  • All Campus Community Members:
  • Subpoenas, Warrants, or Requests for Information
    • For information about responding to subpoenas, warrants, or other third-party requests for information related to immigration questions or other subject, consult the OGC resource page here.
